Whether you have completed a first draft or have a manuscript in progress, writing a family history story, memoir, essay or ancestor profile can often be an overwhelming process. You find yourself too close to the material to identify issues within it and assess its quality with objectivity.
If you are at any stage in your manuscript and need an objective opinion on how to move forward, you need a Story Review.
What is a Story Review?
A Story Review is the first stage of the editing process. During this stage, your story is reviewed, assessing whether the story works as a whole, identifying areas that need improvement and advising on the next course of action. It is not an edit, but rather a professional appraisal of the story to assist the writer in their next steps.
A story review aids an author’s progress towards the next draft. A story review can be commissioned after the first draft or 12th draft and as many times as the author deems necessary.
What's Included in a Story Review?
During a Story Review, Lynn Palermo:
- Brings her professional storytelling experience and fresh eyes to your manuscript
- She'll offer suggestions on how to improve the manuscript.
- Lynn pinpoints sections that need clarification.
- She'll advise on any parts that need adding or removing.
- Lynn will assess the story and concept as a whole.
- She'll identify any plot holes and errors of logic.
- Lynn will advise you on your next course of action.
Submission Guidelines
1. To inquire about a Story Review, please provide the following information in the contact form below:
- your name
- an email address to contact you on
- the length of your story
- a brief outline of your project (up to 100 words for short stories, up to 200 words for novelettes and novellas, or up to 500 words for novels)
- a brief description of the type of feedback you require
- a sample of your work (see 'Free Sample' for accepted sample lengths)
2. In return, Lynn will promptly contact you with:
- a brief assessment of your sample page/s
- an estimated time to complete the project
- the fee for undertaking the project
- details for making payment
3. To continue with the full Story Review, please:
- Confirm that you wish to proceed with the full assessment within three days
- Deposit 50% is required as a down payment
4. When the down payment has been received, Lynn will:
- Assess your manuscript within the agreed upon time
5. Upon completing the review, Lynn will notify you. You will then be required to:
- Pay the remaining project fee before receiving the full manuscript review.
- In return, Lynn will deliver the full manuscript with her notes.
- Includes a report detailing her review of your manuscript.
